Yasir Alfadhl, Queen Mary University London

Biography

Yasir Alfadhl [BEng(Hons.), PhD(Lond.), MIET, MIEEE] is a faculty member and a lecturer in Telecommunications/Electromagnetics groups at the school of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science at Queen Mary University of London since 2009.

In his teaching and research roles, he has acted as principal- and co-principal- investigator in a number of national and international projects. He has also delivered a number of telecommunications courses both in London and as part of a Joint-Programme with universities in Beijing.

Abstract

QMUL's TNE activities in China

Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) has the vision is to develop innovative mutual international partnerships to enable successful collaborative research and teaching through the ‘flying faculty’ model to provide lectures in person. With this in mind the Joint Programme (JP) model was developed and has since been run with increasing successes. The ‘JP’ model is currently unique to QMUL where it combines the academic expertise of two international institutions to create one jointly taught programme, blending the strengths of different educational cultures and providing a more profound awareness of the business practices of both countries.

With one successful JP partnership with Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT) since 2004, and another with Nanchang University in 2013, there has been a number of issues which the connectivity between QMUL in the UK and with the Beijing and Nanchang based campuses.

Considering the needed services, such as Real time – video and voice for tutorials, VLE, Web access, and Emails, a number of network issues have hindered, or at least affected, some of the connectivity aspects. One of the main issues was found to be related to the fact that public networks route via the US to Europe causing delays and packet loss.

In this talk, we will discuss our experience on the connectivity issue, and the use of CERNET with help from Janet to routes westward from China. View Slides Listen to Audio Watch Video Visit Website Close
